Home made Sunflower Seed Butter Recipe

If you told me a 5 years ago that one day I would be blogging a home made sunflower seed butter recipe I would have laughed at you, told you its bird food and then run away (except I wouldn’t have run, I would have walked away).

I have never been a fan of seeds and didn’t understand why people ate them. This is the old me that was holding on to 15kg too many and not doing any exercise. While I was still not that big I was not very healthy at all.

Fast forward 5 years and 15kg lighter with a new-found knowledge about nutrition, exercise and generally living a healthier lifestyle as well as being a bit more adventurous with my foods I now know that Seeds are not just for birds

Seeds are actually pretty tasty – especially sunflower seeds! I use them in a lot of my baking now, including my bliss balls and in my nut mix I have for some morning snacks.

When I got my new Russell Hobbs Multi Food Processor I knew straight away that I wanted to create some nut butters so I went ahead and made some homemade peanut butter. Next I knew I wanted to try making sun-butter and so this home made sunflower butter recipe was born.

I do feel like a bit of a con calling this a recipe as it isn’t exactly hard to make and it only has three ingredients, and only really needs one; the star – Sunflower Seeds!  Ohh and a bit of patience!

A delicious and easy Home made Sunflower Seed Butter Recipe
Ingredients
  • 2 Cups Sunflower Seeds
  • 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil (Liquefied)
  • Shake of Sea Salt
Instructions
  1. Place the sunflower seeds in your food processor, I use the Russell Hobbs Multi Food Processor.
  2. Process until crumbly and scrape down the sides as required.
  3. Keep processing until you’ve been going for about 10 minutes and it looks as though it’s trying to form a butter but not really getting there.
  4. Add the coconut oil and sea salt and continue processing.
  5. Depending on the speed of your food processor you may need to keep going, the aim of the game for this recipe is patience.
  6. Once it starts coming together and looking like peanut butter you’re done!

Notes
This is a simple recipe however you need plenty of patience and to scrape down the sides of the food processor regularly.

This home made sunflower seed butter recipe is naturally nut free, paleo, gluten free, sugar free and has no added nasties.

The sunflower seed butter has a bit of a nutty taste too it without the nuts and is comparable to peanut butter. In fact I enjoyed the home made sunflower seed butter more than my home made peanut butter (GASP!).

Stay tuned for my new favourite Bliss Ball recipe which uses this home made sunflower seed butter recipe.  It also has chocolate and cranberries and is all kinds of amazing. I can’t wait to share it with you, I’ve been taste testing it for about a month now, just to make sure it’s right!

Have you ever tried sunflower seed butter? What did you think? Do you think seeds are for birds?
