Crock Pot Pulled Pork Recipe

A few months a go a new restaurant opened in Newmarket called Hog Heaven. We have been a few times now, thanks to them running a deal with grabone we got some really cheap and delicious meals! Hog Heaven is a Louisiana style restaurant who specialises in good meat, think ribs and pulled pork. Prior to this I don’t think I’d actually tried pulled pork before, but oh boy I do enjoy it!

I thought I would try to make my own spicy crock pot pulled pork recipe so we could have pulled pork a bit more often. Pork has been on special quite a bit lately which has helped reduce our grocery bill slightly!

I wanted to create a recipe which could be left alone in the crockpot all day, that you don’t need to do a lot too when you get home and that will give you leftovers! Pulled pork and vegetables for lunch is pretty darn good!

Crock Pot Pulled Pork Recipe

This spicy pulled pork crockpot recipe is just spicy enough for me to be able to call it spicy but I don’t think it would be spicy enough to offend anyone. You can easily adjust the heat by adding or reducing the amount of hot sauce that the recipe calls for.

If you really enjoy a sweet pulled pork you can simply add some additional BBQ sauce and a little bit of sugar of your choice (brown or coconut would work well). This is a great recipe to make on the weekend or a Monday so you will have leftovers during the week and you can easily double the recipe and keep spare portions in the freezer with no issues.

Crock Pot Pulled Pork Recipe
Ingredients
  • Approx 2kg Pork Shoulder Roast (Or middle)
  • 2 Tablespoons Lime Juice
  • 1 Teaspoon Cumin
  • 1 Teaspoon Paprika
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Onion Salt
  • 1 Pouch of apple sauce (120g)
  • 4 Tablespoon BBQ Marinade (or sauce)
  • 3 Tablespoons Hot Sauce
Instructions
  1. Add the pork and all of the ingredients (except 1 tablespoon of the BBQ marinade and all of the hot sauce) into the crockpot and leave on low all day.
  2. Pull the pork out of the crockpot and set on a chopping board.
  3. If you have a lot of liquid in the bottom of the crockpot pour it into a saucepan and simmer on low .
  4. Shred the pork with two forks – remove the rind and bone at this stage, once it’s all shredded add back to the crockpot.
  5. Add the simmered down liquid back to the pot as well as the 1 tablespoon of BBQ marinade and the hot sauce that you kept aside at the beginning.
  6. Leave the pork in the crockpot while you get whatever you are eating the pork with ready.
Notes
We have also doubled this recipe before and frozen into portions to eat the following week which worked really well. If you don’t like it spicy, don’t put in the hot sauce or reduce the amount of hot sauce. This isn’t super spicy, but it’s just enough (for me anyway), if you enjoy it really hot add more hot sauce.

Do you like pulled pork? Have you ever made it before?

  1. I made an Asian inspired pulled pork once. Was pretty good. I love that there are so many of these kinds of crock pot/slow cooked meals – great for those days when you just can’t be bothered slaving away at dinner time 🙂

  2. Thank you so much for attending week 11 of #PureBlogLove and linking your fantastic blog post. Great pulled pork! I can’t wait to see what you have in store for our party next week Thursday 8 PM EST- Sundays at midnight. Your post has been added to the #PureBlogLove Pinterest board for all to see 🙂 Have a great day!

  3. Love pulled pork, but BBQ sauce gives me a migraine so I have to find other ways to prepare it. One of my favorite things to eat!

  4. I recently had pulled pork for the first time that was slow cooked and it was absolutely sensationally delicious, but I wasn’t fast enough to ask ‘how’ they made it.
So I’m so glad I found your recipe here and that it’s a Slow Cooker one, yeah.

Thanks so much, sounds so yum!

    1. No problem, glad you found it useful!
I find the pulled pork in restaurants are generally loaded full of sugar which make them more decadent too but I think slow cooking is the key for pulled pork!

  5. How many servings did this make? I’m guessing it lasted you two a whole week. Just using a kilo was enough for lunch and dinner for 5 days.

    1. We ate it for lunch and dinner for both of us for 4-5 days and Kyle had it for breakfast for a few days as well. Using the 2kg shoulder you end up taking off the fat and the bone which does mean it is a lot less than 2kg of meat – we are both big protein eaters though, we literally only have meat and vege for breakfast & lunch, so for those who eat less protein it would last a lot longer 🙂
