Fitbit Surge Review

I’ve been using the Fitbit Surge for a couple of months now and thought it was about time I told you all what I think about it so here is my Fitbit Surge Review!

Some of you may remember that earlier in the year I did a review of the Fitbit Charge HR, long story short – it malfunctioned on me and effectively became a Fitbit Flex (the heart rate stopped reading, and I’m fairly certain I haven’t died!). The Fitbit support team were amazing and straight away offered a replacement and upgrade to the Fitbit Surge, which brings us to this review.

My first thoughts of the Fitbit Surge are that it is a little on the bulky side compared to the other Fitbit’s I have tried, it is non-offensive though and the black one that I received goes with everything which is a bonus.

The Fitbit Surge has heaps of cool features including a pedometer which counts your steps. The Fitbit Surge also gives constant heart rate readings so you can check out what your heart rate is doing at any given time and how many km you have moved for the day. Additional features include the number of calories it estimates you have burnt during the day and number of flights of stairs (equivalent) you have gone up.

Not only can you see these statistics at the swipe of a finger (I do think it’s cool that you can swipe with the Fitbit Surge!), you can also track your specific workout. You can choose between a number of preset types of workouts including, general workout, run, weights, hike, elliptical and yoga.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Fitbit Surge also acts as a GPS if you track your workout when you go out for a walk or a run and then get back and review your workout on the FitBit dashboard online it shows you a neat little map of where you have just been!

I really like the sheer number of things you can track and geek out over with the Fitbit Surge!

The things I don’t like are the fact that it is huge for someone with tiny wrists (this is the biggest thing I don’ like) and that you have to click into the exercise you want to track and then click again to make it start timing, I quite often forget the second click and go to finish my workout and turn it off and realise I never actually started it #facepalm.

Have you used a Fitbit or other tracking watch before???

This was not a sponsored post, as much as I would have liked it to have been, I just think it may be helpful πŸ™‚

  1. I have a Fitbit Charge HR and love it. I was a Fitbit One user for 2.5 years and decided to upgrade when the new models came out. I know what you mean about Fitbit customer service – I’d go so far as to call it customer care. They are uber-responsive and will replace things without question. My One died about a month after the 1-year warranty expired and they still replaced it no questions asked! That’s why I wanted to stay with Fitbit.

However, as a triathlete, the Charge HR has its limitations and I’m often seen with my TomTom Multisport GPS watch on one wrist and my Charge HR on the other. Many times I’ve been asked why I need both. quite simply, they both do different things. My Fitbit monitors my steps, heart rate and my sleep. My watch tracks me by GPS and gives me data about my workouts. I can also wear it swimming, which I can’t wear my fitbit for (can you with the Surge?). I’ve thought about the Surge but given the amount I’ve spent on the two devices I have, I can’t quite justify the upgrade costs. But if Fitbit wanted me to try one out for free… πŸ˜‰

  2. I just upgraded from a flex to a charge HR a couple of days ago! I love being able to track my heart rate and have slightly more accurate readings.
I’d love to have my device be a GPS on its own but for now I’ll have to settle for running with my phone on my arm. I think my fitness tracking device addiction could get out of hand eventually hahaha.
I just find all of it really motivating. I swear that without the ability to measure my achievements each day I would either be living with a false sense of security that i was doing more than I am or I’d be unmotivated because I wouldn’t know how well I was doing!

  3. I had the FitBit Flex and loved it but when Michael got the Charge HR I realised I should have waited to get that too. I splurged and got myself a purple Charge HR and I love it.
It’s awesome having a watch handy and the different tracking options are awesome. It’s also served as a great motivator to do a bit more walking and be more conscious of how much time I spend just sitting at work. When I get busy I often forget to take a little walk. Michael’s new CEO has set a reminder for the whole company to take a 5 minute walk every hour and it comes up as an appointment on their calendar. It’s hilarious how annoyed people get by it!

    1. We do end up sitting a lot at work so it’s great that the Fitbit helps remind you to walk a bit as well1 i love that Michael’s CEO has set that reminder but totally see people getting annoyed at it popping up!

  4. I have the Fitbit Charge HR and mostly love it. I always forget to turn on the tracking when I work out, so I’m usually 20 minutes into the workout before I actually start tracking, so really my issue is totally user error. It’s nice though to just have one piece of equipment to track my workouts whether its a run, walk or a weightlifting session.
