I mentioned in my ways to fit exercise in while travelling post that I really enjoy finding a hill or view point and making my way to the top. You are almost always greeted with an amazing view and as an added bonus you get some good exercise in as well.
When we were in Hawaii I knew that one of the things I had to do, even if I had to go by myself was the Diamond Head Hike. Diamond Head is a prominent backdrop to a lot of tourist photo’s that are taken in Oahu.
The thing about Diamond Head is that it is a decent hike up to the top. It is not super hard and most people should be able to manage it but the path is not smooth and you need to watch your footing.
If you are going to do the Hike I recommend getting in early, we made sure we were up there by around 8am and found that to be a pretty good time, as we were going down a lot of the tourist buses were just starting to send people up.
We decided to run from our apartment to the base and then walk up Diamond Head. If you don’t want to walk or run in from Waikiki you can also get the bus which takes you too the car park which will be cheaper than a tour!
It costs $1 per person to walk in and $5 per car to go in, this is the first Hike I’ve ever had to pay money for, I find it a little strange but it’s cheap enough and a beautiful view at the top!

Awesome!! I’d love to do the Diamond Head trails! We were watching Hawaii Five-O (we do it for the scenery because I’m obsessed with going to Hawaii one of these days) and I had told Mr Unprepared we have to do that. He LOVES a good hike and I said, there’s something you’d love! He agreed. So jealous (but happy for you)! x
PS Of course, in the Hawaii Five-O episode, the couple that climbs it gets killed by a ridiculous remote controlled drone but no biggie haha.
I had never seen Hawaii Five-O until we were in Hawaii! The scenery is awesome though, I can see why you watch it! We saw the film crew around the place a few times as well, hopefully you will get to see that too when you get over there!! Lol about the Hawaii Five-o episode with the drone, I’m almost positive that won’t happen too you 😉
Just did the hike last week! It was fairly easy but getting really hot by 9am! My partner and I are both reasonably fit and we were fine, just sweaty. There were people of all ages doing it and some were really funny to listen to as we passed them. The view is totally worth the hike but you have to fight for a good photo spot!
We managed to get a car park in the place right before the tunnel to enter so we only had to pay $1 each, score! I think so long as the money is going towards the maintenance of the park then I’m happy to pay.
