Reducing the Risk of Injury with Supports

Reducing the Risk of Injury with Supports

I’ve injured both of my ankles numerous times – funnily enough, every single time has been playing netball! Probably a good things I’ve given netball up, huh?! Since I’ve had these past injuries, I try to reduce my risk of injury by using Supports where possible so that I do not have to stop doing the things I love.

My worst ankle injury was when we were living in Auckland and I played for a work indoor netball team. The game got a little rough and I rolled my ankle pretty badly (the worst I had ever done), with a couple of minutes to go. Instead of coming off the court I stayed on, which was a silly mistake. I ended up on crutches and in a moon boot, a lot of painkillers, visits to the hospital and an MRI later we found out that I had sprained the ankle really badly, bruising on the bone and the ligaments had pulled away from where they should be, fun times (not!).

Even now – over three years later, that same ankle still gives me grief every now and again. I find that I need to wear my most supportive shoes when I take Metafit, or go on a long walk or a run.

Metafit is a High Intensity Interval Class which entails a decent amount of jumping (it can be scaled for those who can’t jump, however I need to be able to demonstrate all versions). If I don’t wear my most supportive shoes I find that my ankle that I damaged most recently can be a bit tender for the rest of the day and sometimes even the next day.

This past weekend I was instructing a Metafit session and I trialled the FUTURO™ Slim Silhouette ‘For Her’ Ankle Support. I trialled the support with a pair of shoes which are not super supportive so that I could really see if the Support worked.

I was pleasantly surprised when I went to do my Squat Workout later that day that I didn’t have any niggles in my ankle at all. Even the next day my ankle is still perfectly fine. It’s safe to say that I would recommend using the Futuro Brand range of supports and braces – for ankles at least!

The support I used is specifically designed for females and is quite thin but supportive. This means that it fits in your shoes and under your long leggings with no problems. I didn’t even really notice it was there at all.

The Futuro Brand offers a range of support and brace solutions from knee and ankle to wrist and elbow as well as hands and back. There is a competition currently running where you can WIN a holiday for you and your family, simply become a #FuturoHero by telling your story over on the Futuro Brand Facebook Page.

  1. Omg this is so what i need! Have hurt ankle after being a little over enthusiastic when i joined the gym this year, still having physio and its still a bit sore but haven’t given up my workouts 😊 This would give me peace of mind that its supported.

  2. I’ve injured both my ankles in the past too, and now I’m very wary of injuring them again – especially since I feel like they never fully recovered! I’ve seen these Futuro supports in the past (used to sell them at the pharmacy) but never thought of investing in one myself, I’m so keen! I think I would need the medium size

  3. I’d be a large. I’d definitely use these supports when I’m out on a trail, especially as I rolled my ankle a little while ago so it would be good to have that extra support 🙂

  4. I’ve done my hip, elbow and shoulder doing various gym/surfing/sports, I need these to at least keep my ankles in decent shape!

  5. This is so what i need, i am so accident prone the physios love me 😛
I rolled my Ankle at the beginning of the year while bush walking with friends, and really wanting to get back into kickboxing so the added support would be helpful

  6. My daughter loves netball and plays with all she has got. This is awesome but always leaves her prone to crashing. She rolled her ankle really badly a few seasons ago and it has now left her with a weak ankle. This would be perfect for her in a medium.

  7. Omg this sounds just what i need, sprained it really badly over 18 months ago rolled it again not so badly in Feb but its been so sore lately definitely need some support

  8. Small please. I swiped one of these from my brother and it’s fantastic on my old broken ankle, but I guess I’ll have to give it back soon. And it’s a bit stretched (oops).

  9. This is exactly what I need! I played netball for 10 years and it’s left me with pain when running and I’d love to give this a good and see if it helps!

  10. I would love this! I’ve got a weal ankle and it also seems to give away just when I’m getting somewhere in my training! Would be so useful.

  11. Oh so could use this, I have dreadful ankles (they roll outwards) and it just stuffs up any form of routine on my tiny wee feet. I am also looking at the knee ones.

  12. Oooh a medium would be great! I’ve started running again but have noticed my left ankle niggles quite a bit but I don’t want to stop again – it’s my ‘me’ time
