Training at the Train Station

Last weekend we were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to train at Train Station Fitness in Te Awamutu. The b/fs family are from Hamilton so Te Awamutu wasn’t too far out of the way for us to include in a trip to visit them.

Having not been a gym goer all my life I can still feel a bit intimidated when I walk into a new gym and don’t know where everything is and how to use each of the machines. Being female it can also be a bit intimidating going into male dominated areas in the gym.

Train Station have helped to remove some of the intimidation factor by having a small female only area which contains a few machines and an awesome motivational quote on the wall. Most importantly you don’t need to go down into the more male dominated area to get it to. It is also right beside the room where the classes are run from.

We ventured down the couple of stairs where you will inevitably stop at the top to take a look at the photos of all the people who train at Train Station who have competed in body building events including their placings.  Downstairs there is everything you could ever want including two squat racks and two different type of leg press machines. The day we visited was leg day so we focused on those machines and equipment.

Once I had completed my workout which included squats and dead-lifts as well as a few sets on the leg press I had a quick 10 minutes on the treadmill before making my way  into the female area and grabbed a sandbag and took it in to the class area – which is just a wide open area with a couple of boxing bags hanging in the corner as well as a large tyre.

I created a little circuit with the sandbag where I squatted down to pick up the sandbag and flip it up to my chest and then pressed it overhead and all the way back down – I did this a few times and then flipped the large tyre the length of the room and then turned around and flipped it the rest of the way back to where I started. I took a quick rest to catch my breath and then completed the circuit a few more times until the bf was finished with his training.

Overall I really enjoyed my session at the Train Station. If you are used to brand new shiny gyms then it may not be your cup of tea as this is a gym where you come to workout and not look pretty. Get stuck in and get your workout done so you can go home and enjoy the rest of your day/weekend.

If your in Te Awamutu pop in and check out Train Station Fitness – Located at 146 Teasdale Street, Te Awamutu

Have you ever been to a different gym other than your usual gym? Do you use the female only areas of the gym at all? Let me know in the comments below…

  1. This kinda reminds me of my gym! I train at Miada in Otahuhu (they have one in Avondale too!) and it’s definitely a gym where you go to work out and get a good sweat up (and there ain’t nothin pretty about that!). It’s a power lifting/strongman gym so the equipment is built to withstand A LOT of weight and definitely doesn’t look shiny and new – it was quite a change considering I was with Jetts beforehand.. but I love it!
It has a female only area upstairs, but I never use it. All the good machines are downstairs, hahaha! 😉
